Materials Processing and Advanced Characterization
- Multifunctional Materials: engineering materials based on their combination, functionalization or microstructural control (e. g. advanced composites, nanostructured cementitious hydraulic binders)
- Extended materials characterization (cellular materials, metallic, ceramic, composite, metallic matrix nanocomposites, cork agglomerate, natural, phase change materials, waste-based and biomaterials), including fracture, fatigue under multiaxial loading, tribology, reaction to high-temperature and solar radiation
- Components characterization: reliability and maintainability of complex devices, (e.g. biomedical - dental implants, contact lenses, hip prostheses-, transports)
- Materials for Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques and subsequent surface and heat treatments, and role in AM-Product Development.
Materials Modelling
- Constitutive models of materials’ systems, using multi-scale (micro-/meso-/macroscopic) methods to consider the effect of microstructure and interfaces in the macro-scale mechanical, acoustic and hydrothermal behaviour.
Manufacturing Processes
- Innovative, flexible, environmental-friendly manufacturing processes with emphasis on metal forming, casting, joining and polymer, composite and stone processing
- Integration of new materials and optimization of existing manufacturing processes, by deeper understanding of the fundamental phenomena playing a key role in their performance.
