Fernando Neves, aeronautical engineer from LAETA's Aeronautics and Astronautics Research Center, has been elected to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Associate Fellow Class of 2023. AIAA brings together industry, academia, and government to advance engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense and is the world's largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession, with nearly 35,000 individual members from 91 countries and 95 corporate members.

According to AIAA Constitution 3.2: "ASSOCIATE FELLOWS shall be persons who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics."
AIAA President Laura J. McGill states that those selected as Associate Fellows must be "individuals of distinction who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics."

Per AIAA, Fernando Neves has distinguished himself by his notable contributions and accomplishments to the aerospace community and thus has earned this esteemed membership level. Only one out of every 150 voting members is chosen and approved annually. The selection process is extremely competitive; only about 17% of AIAA members are Associate Fellows.
