LAETA's president elected to the prestigious Lisbon Academy of Sciences

Pedro Camanho, President of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport, and Aerospace (LAETA), researcher and Vice-President of INEGI, and Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), was recently elected a corresponding member of the prestigious Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, in the 7th section - Engineering Sciences.

With an extensive research career, Pedro Camanho's work is internationally recognized, particularly in the study and simulation of deformation and fracture mechanisms of advanced composite materials at different temporal and spatial scales.

Following this recognition, Pedro Camanho expressed his honour and gratitude, stating that "it is a great honour to have been elected to an institution created in 1779, which has promoted scientific research, literature, and culture. I am fully committed to contributing to the mission of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, which is of great importance for the development of our country.”

After completing his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at FEUP in 1993, Pedro Camanho obtained his Ph.D. from the prestigious Imperial College London, in the United Kingdom, in 1999, in the Department of Aeronautics. In the same year, he returned to Portugal to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at FEUP and assume the position of director of the Structural Integrity Unit of INEGI. Currently, he is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering since 2014, President of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport, and Aerospace (LAETA), and Vice-President of INEGI.

Pedro Camanho is also a member of the Council of the European Society for Composite Materials (ESCM). More recently, he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, was honored as Researcher of the Year by the University of Porto in 2020, and received the Career Award from the Portuguese Society of Fatigue and Structural Integrity.

The inauguration ceremony will take place on July 6th at the Noble Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
