Title

Smart multifunction textiles for integrated soldier systems

Challenge

Develop a solution for modernizing soldiers’ equipment, that will be able to provide electronic networking and situational awareness capabilities for the integration of soldiers to network-centric warfare and operational environments, and that will reduce the total weight of equipment and preserve individual combat capabilities.

Goal

Develop a full system of smart clothes and equipment for soldiers, through the study and further development of most relevant textile-based advanced technologies and the design and prototyping of a multi-layer and multi-functional concept which will integrate these technologies in order to achieve this enhanced protection, comfort and operational capabilities.

Outcome

The smart and multifunctional textile modules will be integrated either in the first or the second layer to address the requirements deemed to be the most crucial in modern soldier systems: thermoregulation; monitoring of the soldier’s physiological state; monitoring of the protective equipment; energy management (integration of energy conversion and distribution through textiles, with consideration of soldier architecture in particular to replace heavy and bulky cables and connectors); Human-Machine Interfaces (how data is transferred and displayed); and geolocalization.

Main Contribution:
  • Support the definition of system requirements related with the integration of multifunctional systems through a technology roadmapping approach;
  • Identify and study possibilities for data acquisition, storage and communication with sensors and control systems of other smart textiles and the interface to the HMI;
  • Support the partners in the design and integration of the thermoregulation modules by performing simulation-based analyses, looking to the thermal comfort by evaluating the physiological conditions, thermal signature, energy consumption and other relevant criterion.
